Blocked drain in Falkirk: what to do first

If you have a blocked drain in Falkirk, the first job is working out where the blockage is and whose pipe it sits in. Brian Robb covers Falkirk from his base in Alloa, just across the Forth, clearing blocked drains, toilets and gullies, jetting stubborn runs and putting a camera down drains that keep blocking.

Most blockages give a warning first: a slow sink or bath, a toilet that rises before it empties, a gurgle from the plughole or a smell around an outside cover. When you notice one, these four checks tell you a lot.

  1. Stop running water

Every flush or tap adds to what is backing up, and it has to go somewhere.

  2. One fitting or the whole house?

One slow sink points to that waste pipe. Every fitting backing up points further down, to the drain outside.

  3. Lift the outside cover

If you can do it safely: a full chamber means the blockage is downstream, an empty one means it is between the house and the chamber.

  4. Ask a neighbour

If next door has the same problem, the blockage may be in a shared drain or a public sewer, which changes who deals with it.

Avoid caustic chemicals on a drain that is already full. They rarely shift a solid blockage, and they make the water dangerous for whoever opens the chamber next. Brian covers the FK1 and FK2 postcodes, from Camelon and Bainsford to Grahamston, Laurieston, Hallglen, Polmont and Brightons.

Whose drain is it? Falkirk homes, Scottish Water and Falkirk Council

In Scotland the dividing line is your property boundary. Scottish Water's guide to drains and sewers explains that a drain becomes a public sewer from the point it leaves the land belonging to your property, or joins drains coming from another property. Road drains are different again: local authorities look after the drainage of local roads, which in Falkirk means Falkirk Council.

  • YouPipes inside your boundary that only serve your property

Waste pipes, the drain under your garden or driveway and the chamber on your land. You arrange and pay for clearing or repairs. This is the work Brian does.

  • Owners togetherDrains shared by several homes inside one boundary

A block of flats or a tenement often shares one private system. Citizens Advice Scotland says the owners are jointly responsible, usually as set out in the title deeds.

If several neighbours are affected, report it to Scottish Water's free helpline on 0800 0778778.

  • Falkirk CouncilRoad gullies and drains in the street

Water pooling on the road because the gully is blocked is reported through Falkirk Council's Report it page, under road defects.

  • Your landlordYou rent the property

Tell your landlord, letting agent or the council if you are a council tenant. Private landlords in Scotland must keep drains in proper working order under the Repairing Standard.

Much of the drainage advice online is written for England, where a 2011 law moved many shared private sewers to the water companies. Scotland never had that transfer, so English guidance on who pays can be wrong for a Falkirk home. If you are not sure where your pipe ends, Brian can trace the run and show you on camera.

What happens when Brian comes out in Falkirk

When you call, you speak to Brian, the engineer who does the work. He asks what is happening, which fittings are affected and whether there is an outside chamber, so he knows what kit to bring.

  1. Clear the blockage

A blockage in a waste pipe or a short run is usually rodded or cleared by machine. Heavier build up of fat, silt, scale or roots is cleared with high-pressure water jetting, done to the Water Jetting Association's standards. Brian is registered with the WJA under number 276420.

  2. Find the cause

If a drain keeps blocking, a CCTV drain survey puts a camera down the pipe and shows why: a displaced joint, a crack, roots getting in, or a dip where waste settles. You see the footage, so any repair is based on evidence.

  3. Fix it properly

Repairs range from cutting out roots and patch lining a damaged section to excavating and replacing a broken length of pipe. Brian explains what he found and what each option involves before any repair starts.

Why drains block, and what helps in Falkirk

According to Scottish Water there are over 36,000 blocked drains and sewers across Scotland every year, and around 80% of them are caused by the wrong things going down the toilet or fat, oil and grease going down the sink. The drain from a house to the sewer is usually only about four inches wide, so wipes, cotton buds and cooking fat build up quickly.

Three habits prevent most repeat callouts:

  • Only flush the three Ps: pee, poo and toilet paper. Wipes marked as flushable still cause blockages.
  • Let cooking fat cool, scrape it into the bin and wipe pans before washing them.
  • Keep leaves and silt out of yard gullies, especially in autumn, and fit a grid where one is missing.

Who you will deal with in Falkirk

CB Drainage Scotland is run by Brian Robb, an army veteran with over a decade of hands-on drainage experience. He is fully insured, including public liability, and holds WJA and EUSR registration. Brian is based at 80 Churchill Street in Alloa and covers a 45-mile radius across Central Scotland, which takes in all of Falkirk and the surrounding towns.

Most callouts end with the drain cleared and nothing more to do. When a survey does show damage, new or altered drainage in Scotland is covered by standard 3.7, wastewater drainage, in the Scottish Government's building standards technical handbook. If a problem sits in a shared drain or the public sewer rather than your own pipe, Brian will tell you, so you are not paying for someone else's responsibility.

“Fast response time and very professional.”

Blocked drains in Falkirk: common questions

Is a blocked drain in my Falkirk garden my responsibility?

Usually, yes. In Scotland the pipework inside your property boundary that only serves your home is private, so you arrange and pay for clearing it. Once the drain leaves your land or joins another property's drain it becomes a public sewer, which is Scottish Water's responsibility.

Who do I contact about a blocked drain in the street?

Road gullies and street drains are looked after by the local council. In Falkirk you can report one through Falkirk Council's Report it page, under road defects, which lists blocked drains.

My neighbours are having the same problem. What does that mean?

If several homes are backing up at once, the blockage is probably in a shared drain or the public sewer. A sewer problem is reported to Scottish Water's free helpline on 0800 0778778. A shared private drain inside one boundary, such as under a block of flats, is the owners' joint responsibility.

I rent my home in Falkirk. Who should sort a blocked drain?

Tell your landlord, letting agent or the council if you are a council tenant. Private landlords in Scotland have to keep drains in proper working order under the Repairing Standard.

Does CB Drainage cover all of Falkirk?

Yes. Brian is based in Alloa and covers a 45-mile radius across Central Scotland, which includes Falkirk town and areas such as Camelon, Bainsford, Laurieston, Hallglen, Polmont and Brightons. Call 07935 496833 or send the details through the quote form.
